Mark, search a website called "cnet".  If I recall they did an article on 
just such a procedure a couple of months ago and tested some fairly inexpensive 
software for the process.  I also heard once that putting the drive in your 
freezer overnight sometimes works but I've never tried it.

PS, thanks for the good parts service in the past.  Still looking for a 
Maytag Upright with Magneto manual.
