I use snap ring pliers, the heavy flat ones for removing square snap rings, if I break a ring I'll let you know. :-)  Tie wraps are used in the auto industry on vacuum and vent hoses, no pressure applications. Outboards use them on fuel lines, these are low pressure systems. I find that if you make two wraps you can get a little more stretch, they'll hold better.
