[SEL] OT ..congrats to the US

Well we both have our voting systems and I would say that the vast majority
of Yanks and Aussies are happy with what they've got. Peters original post
was to congratulate the Americans of the list on electing a new President.
The democratic system has triumphed again and in fact history has been made
by democratically electing a African American person. Who would have thought
it possible until very recently? On top of that a President who has a
sweeping social agenda that if implemented will affect every American and to
some extent the rest of the world. We see here in the news reports African
Americans are over the moon on the election of your new President. It's a
while since that happened!
I'm sure that all the Aussies here wish our friends well under the new
administration.

In this case, the huge turnout is a measure of the massive cultural divide
in the US.

It was the result of a get-out-the-vote arms race between the liberal and
conservative wings.

Compulsory voting would seen to encounter the law of unintended
consequences,
in the form of the rebellious faction marking ballots at random.
With the number of oppressive measures in Oz right now, that faction may be
getting rather large?
