[SEL] Cast iron chemistry

OK I will stick my neck out a way. Top quality CI will have
a low carbon content of 1% or so, low grade CI will be up
around 4%. A lot of the other types such as chilled, white,
gray and meonite get their qualities from the pour
temperature, carbon content, and post pour heat treatment.
This is a very simplistic explanation and as Peter says, get
a book on the subject.

Subject: [SEL] Cast iron chemistry

Can someone tell me the common content of cast iron used for
various things.
Examples include:
The cast iron used on the old engine blocks and heads.
The cast used for the flywheels.
The cast used for auto engine blocks
The cast used for auto engine blocks in the 60s.
Were the heads cast using different chemistries?
What is "automotive gray cast iron"

Thanks.
