Ron:

Go to your friendly auto parts store and get a roll of iron "mechanic's wire".  It is around 14-16 gauge and when straigtened, cut to length and bundled, makes an excellent core.

Although coat hanger wire will work, it would make a rather bulky core and I think it is a bit on the hard side and will retain some magnetism, making it a little less efficient.  I suppose you could anneal it and it would work better.
