Thanks, the pin is out.  The problem was the pin was recessed  down in the 
gear on both sides, so very hard to tell what it was, and I  thought of the 
tapered pin too. Figuring it had to come out one way or the  other, found a small 
end mill and away I went.  The pin was very recessed  on one side, so this 
gave me something to align the end mill to.  It was a  straight steel pin, 
apparently a forced fit to the shaft.  Headed to a  friends machine shop in the 
morning for some precise machining!
