[SEL] Favorite type of engine

Hey George, good to hear from you. Good topic.

I tend toward horizontal engines, mainly out of concern for handling
them. I like to go to engine shows and handling vertical engines always
concerns me with the high CG.
I tend to hit and miss rather than throttlers. However, one little
throttler intrigued me at a show this weekend. A WisconnaPep (sp?). The
intricate casting shape at the top of the water hopper to hold the tanks
was really neat. Thankfully some else bought it and it did not follow me
home! I'm out of room at home.
I prefer engine other than hopper cooled. The more unusual the cooling
method the better. I get more questions about what a screen cooler is
(Famous) and what a tray cooler (Alamo) than just about anything else.
Hopper cooled engines with site gages are neat.
I prefer ignitor engines over spark plug models. Mag vs. battery and
coil makes no difference. But a mag is more convenient vs. the battery
and coil.
I like engines that display flowing petrol.
Engines with working parts on the non traditional side are neat too.
Engines of 2 cycle design rarely capture collecting interest. I like
oilfields for their size, but not enough to plant one in the yard.
The more monkey motion the better.
Engines with unique governing systems I find more desirable.
I find gasoline engines most desirable, then kero engines, with diesels
in last place.
I appreciate engines most in their as found working clothes. However,
more common engines, long missing any original paint, I find painted in
exceptional fashion very nice. I admire what the European collectors do
with their engines.
I tend to collect engines in the 5 to 10HP range, followed by engines
under 5 HP, and last under consideration would be engines over 10 HP.
