Hi Jeff,

I always prime and sand before paint.
I feel it helps fill some imperfections but I also feel it helps the
paint stick better.
Mostly if you get a "ding" moving stuff around.

I'm not much on spray painting.
Mostly because I don't care to spend a lot on fancy auto finishes and
expensive thinners.
Rust-Oleum is my usual choice.

I have had a lot of "fish-eye" problems with Rust-Oleum spray cans - 
even after extensive cleaning with degreasers.

I thin my paint pretty much with paint thinner and brush on many coats,
sanding with 
280 wet'n dry or 000 steel wool between each coat.

I've even used varnish for a clear coat and it works out real well.
