 On both of my 6 hp engines, the inlet side is on the right and outlet is on 
the left.  Also the inlet is facing down drawing from the bottom of the tank 
and the outlet is facing left at right angle to plunger going to the carb. I 
have had good success with plumbers graphite rope type calking, but understand 
the square teflon type works well too.  It does not take much to fill the void.
