[SEL] Winch batteries

If you are using this winch every day then I would go with the deep
cycle batteries. For one engine show a week or less with a fair amount
of driving to and from the show I would just use a inexpensive car
battery and charge it from the tow vehicle. Here is how. Connect a
high wattage 12 volt bulb such as a back up light bulb between the
trucks 12 volts, and the battery. The bulb serves as a variable
resistor between the truck and the trailer battery. When the trailer
battery is low the bulb will light, limiting the current drawn from the
truck. This protects the trucks alternator and wiring. As the trailer
battery charges the light will get dimmer. Light bulbs have a unique
characteristic. When they are cold, there resistance is very low. This
will allow the battery to get that last bit of charge that would take
longer then with a normal resistor with a high enough resistance to
protect the truck wiring with a dead battery. I used this hookup for
many years with a camper and it worked well.
