My bet is property taxes contributed greatly to the demise. 
Governmental regulations following closely behind that. The little 
farms can not keep up with the cost of implementing the new crop 
handling and production regulations constantly being forced upon 
them. And they can not take advantage of the governmental subsidies 
as well as the mega farms.  And there may have been some ineptitude 
in the operation as well.    It was a lot of things I bet. Mark
