As seen in Patrick's photo some early J's had water piston pumps bolted to
the engine frame under the fuel/oil pump, the piston was operated from a
separate cam between the big end and the fly wheel, as can be seen on mine

What is left of the pump shows no sign of any non return valve 
 arrangement.
