When the local sugar mill was still open I would stop in  the machine shop while out road testing vehicles. It was always interesting to see what they were repairing. The shafts for the mill rollers were probably 16"-18", brass bearings with babbit liners. The welder had babbitt wire that looked like solder, he would tin the worn bearings with acid core solder and build up with babbitt, much like soldering. They would then mount the bearings on the table of a large Cincinatti mill and bore them.
