[SEL] Portland & Baraboo Shows

We had a great fortnight, met up with all the regulars and both shows
were really good.

Apart from the thunderstorm at Baraboo (which we missed) the weather
was good, and the engine selection was better than average.

The Charity Dinner & Auction went off well, Dave would be able to
confirm figures, but I think it was over $1400 or so, with 25 bidders.

We drove about 2000 miles all told, visited lots of Antique Malls and
bought far more stuff than we had room for in our luggage, fortunately
American Airlines didn't hit us for our overweight bags on the flight
back home!

Thanks to Dave Rotigel and Arnie Fero for the welcome and hospitality,
and to Jim Dunmyer for bringing along some parts for us that we had
bought back in April for our Land Rover Discovery.

The outstanding engine item has to be Brian & Jonathan Triebner's Otto
Slide Valve engine, superb runner and so nice to watch running. We
were able to get close up with the cameras on Friday and have taken a
9 minute video of it running, I'll post the URL later when it has
finished. We did try to upload it last evening but had trouble with
Youtube, it is 1.1gb file size.

It was very good to see Mike Tucker in better shape than when we last
saw him in 2008, excellent news that his condition has stabilised.

All too soon it was time to say our goodbyes, and we left Portland at
4pm to drive up to Chicago. The flight home on Saturday morning was
good, our youngest son met us at Heathrow, and we were home by
12.40am.

Looking through the picture files of both shows, it was clear that the
hobby is in good shape, and the attendance at both shows indicated
that the recession hasn't hit too badly.

Thanks to everyone for a great time.
