Jimmy,
They work identical to the McVickers engine. The design is a
bit different but the principal is the same. Steve Royster has a very
nice 1 HP McVickers that runs like a watch. He might provide some
insight.

Subject: [SEL] St. Marys Gearless
Hello, I'm trying to help out a friend that purchased a basket case St.
Marys 4 horse "gearless" hopper cooled engine. I don't completely
understand how it functions but somehow a portion of the compression
pressure opens the exhaust valve. If anyone has a manual or close up
photos "I'd pass them on to him. I 'd like to see it run. Thanks Jimmy
