[SEL] St. Marys Gearless

Hello, I'm trying to help out a friend that purchased a basket case St.
Marys  4 horse "gearless" hopper cooled engine. I don't completely
understand how it functions but somehow a portion of the compression
pressure opens the exhaust valve. If anyone has a manual or close up photos
