I would think that maybe up to one almost half the width of the blade thickness, not more.  You don't want to have any gap between the teeth, or it won't cut in that space.  You  should be able to look down the row of teeth and have it look like a "vee" shaped trough.  I know it's harder on a circle, but you get the idea.  On a handsaw, you can slide a needle down that trough.
