Hi Al,
         I went with the Red Cross on the suggestion of most of the 
Aussies. The Red Cross is not going to take any "Admin costs" - everything 
is going toward helping victims one way or another  and they are a 
reputable organisation.  They also send you a nice letter of thanks and a 
receipt for the "tax man" - obviously automatically generated but that's 
quite acceptable under the circumstances.
         Much better than donations to an African Charity - you should just 
see the salaries, the cars and the homes of the "trustees" of the "Nelson 
Mandela Childrens Fund". I have a lot of respect for Mr. Mandela himself 
but the fund is not administered by him.

         Another "plus" is that the whole thing is quite painless (just 
have your credit card details ready). The site is very fast and extremely 
easy to use. A feather in their caps!
Hopefully it will slow down a bit as soon as all you "Yanks" start logging 
on to make donations :-)
