It doesn't really matter that they're in series or parallel as long as the two coils are -either- wired in the same direction and connected backwards (in electrical polarity) or are wound in opposite directions and hooked together with the same electrical polarity. Rule of Thumb applies.
Well - if you do connect them in series, you will need double the voltage to get the same magnetic field.
And, yes, I still have my Gaussmeter. Checked it out the other day and the original battery is still good. I need to start taking it to shows.
