Hi Tom,
Put another vote in the "shims" column. I've used the pliers on small rings but on
the bigger ones I've used the spring steel shims. The thing I've found tricky is
that it seems that at a given time, only a couple of the shims are taking the load
and the others have a tendency to slip out. Still and all it's worked for me.
