In the old, old, old days, when engineers were trained to be ... well, 
engineers, colleges had engines for the students to work with, measuring 
power, calorific burn of fuel, efficency ... basically anything which 
could be measured.  The specially made college engines had extra 
adjusters on just about everything.  They were discarded as a learning / 
teaching tool when it was discovered that everything can be learned from 
a book!
