Hi Peter,
If I understand your British terminology, you're looking for some  
7/16-20 acorn nuts.  The convenient source would be www.mcmaster.com.

They show 18-8 stainless for $2.56 per nut
Plain steel is $11.45 per pack of 20 nuts.
