On Public Television:
Tonight in the Los Angeles area at 9:00 PM there will be a 90 minute
documentary called "Journey to Palomar." This is the story of George
Ellery Hale who was the astronomer that was responsible for establishing
three telescopes that each were the largest in the world when they first
went into operation. The first two were located at the Mount Wilson
Observatory located in the mountains above Pasadena, California and the
third one was the 200 inch instrument located at Mt. Palomar near San
Diego, California. The 60 inch telescope at Mt. Wilson went into use in
1908 and the 100 inch telescope in 1917.
What keeps this a little bit on topic is the fact that there are a few
seconds of film showing the 1911 50 HP Fairbanks Morse type RE running that
my brother and I have the privilege of maintaining.
If you have an interest in the history of science and technology you might
find this a 90 minutes well spent. I'm not sure what the broadcast
schedule is across the country.

Larry Evans
