You got that right.  The problem I saw with replacing the adjusting  screw 
was that it pulled off center too.  Jim's method of attaching a yoke  to the 
vice grips worked out much better like he said.
 
If I had taken a much wider angle picture you would have seen much other  
junk lying on top of the work bench too!  Floors!  Walls!  Etc!
