Hi Elden,
         There is a description of the silencer here:
<http://www.oldengine.org/members/evans/WolseleyR/silencer.htm>.
or a drawing from the same page here:
<http://www.oldengine.org/members/evans/WolseleyR/sil2.jpg>

         On this one I did not use any formula - just made sure the total
"surface area" of all the holes in each of the baffle tubes was not less
than the surface area of the inlet hole (ie. no back pressure worth
mentioning). You will notice that the 2nd baffle tube is interchangeable
with a "free flow" tube for when I feel like making a bit of noise but
actually this engine runs so quietly that there is very little difference
when it's idling along - of course, if I put a load on it there would be a
big difference.

         The silencer I made for the Maytag needed a bit of back pressure
and you can read about it here:
<http://www.oldengine.org/members/evans/maytag/muffler.htm>

         I know very little (actually nothing :-)) about muffler design -
pretty much just stumble along and end up with something that works. <grin>

Keep the revs up (or down)
