The sugar mill clsest to my shop is now closed, but I used to visit the machine shop while road testing cars. Always an interesting stop, innovative machinist and craftsmen that had to make things work. The mill rollers were on 18" shafts and babbit bearings. The welder would build them up with babbit in a wire form, he would lay it in as if he were brazing. The machinist would bore one half at a time in the Cincinatti mill. I realized that machine work was about setting up, using your imagination. The metal cutting was the easy part.
