Tommy,

Your Domestic story reminds me of Clyde Schurman. Clyde had a couple IHC
single cylinder tractors that I and others had tried for years to buy. Clyde
would listen to you try and figure away to get him to sell the tractors and
in the end would say that he didn't want to sell. I had tried for 12 plus
years to buy the 20 HP Titan Model D with every trick I could think of. Then
one day I and a friend went up to visit Clyde and take him to lunch. I had
an old wore out crumpled up brown paper bag filled with cash that I took
with me. We visited for about an hour with the bag on the table. He had no
idea what was in it but kept looking at the bag out of the corner of his
eye. Finally we decided to go get lunch and were putting on our coats when
Clyde asked what was in the bag. I picked up the bag and told him that I
knew he did not want to sell the IHC Tractor but if he ever changed his mind
that I was the first phone number he needed to call. I dumped the money out
on the table and said this is to show you that I am serious! Clyde got real
sober and asked how much was there. I told him that he needed to count it to
find out. After he stared at it for awhile he and his wife counted the pile.
He started in that he didn't want to sell the tractor. My friend asked him
why he didn't want to sell, saying that I would be a good caretaker. He
looked at Julius and told him "I said I didn't want to sell the tractor...I
never said I wouldn't sell the tractor." At that point we shook hands and
went to lunch. When we came back he wanted to find the book that went with
the 20 HP Titan Model D so we took a trip to the basement. While looking he
ran into the book for the 20 HP IHC Type B 2 Speed and gave it to me to look
at, while he continued to look for the other book. When I was finished
looking I handed it back to him at which point he said I needed to keep it
as he was not going to split the 2 tractors up and I needed to buy the other
one. A payment program was set up and the rest is history! There were other
engines that I had purchased over the years from Clyde that no one else
could buy.

Elden,
There was a gent near me who had a real nice Domestic engine. All
the collectors knew he had it but nobody seemed to be able to buy it. I
had never tried and one day I stopped by his place. After looking at
the engine I asked him if he'd sell it. "No it ain't for sale" he said
"I'll always hang on to it". As I turned to get in my truck I said "I'd
give you $200 for it". He said "well, it ain't for sale but I ain't no
fool, give me your money". Seems as if everyone had tried to buy it but
no one ever made him an offer. When he said "it ain't for sale" they
would just walk off. You never know till you try.

when I was buying something and offered way less than the seller was asking,
figuring that with a little haggling, I could get it for a decent price.
The aw-shoot came when the offer accepted. Shoulda offered even less!
