I don't know that I agree with the "lucky" tag being universal 
Tom.

To witness the demise of all your workmates and wonder all the 
time when your turn would come, did not make for a happy time 
during the latter years with "the company" or during 
retirement for a family member.

He was a term of life worker for James Hardie/Hardie Ferodo. 
Started with them at age 17 and retired at 65. Passed on at 82 
with only the faintest shadow on his left lung. He had a lot 
of time to think. Lucky, maybe, maybe not.
