If it will take place of scraping a bearing, I'm for it! I can still remember how my muscles ached the day after a friend and I scraped the mains in my American LaFrance 570 cubic inch 4-banger!
We did it with the engine in the chassis and had to bench press that crankshaft about a hundred times before I was satisfied that we had a good fit.
They say to not get it into ball bearings and, although I didn't read the detailed instructions, I think I would clean the heck out of the bearings before final assembly.
