Thank you very much, John and Tommy.
I used my little Kabar 1226 to tap it and then went out to my engine shed and tapped a bar of babbitt. I also tapped some known lead.
This is lead. Cool ringing sound on babbitt, John.
Then I used the same Kaber 1226 to carve a bit. Again,,,, This is lead.
The way that R is stamped on it I was hoping for a different result, but oh well,,, 8>))
Thanks again guys !!!!
This list IS great.

Lead is much softer than babbitt. Babbitt is an alloy potentially
containing nickel, tin, copper, etc. You can take a pocket knife and
easily "shave" the edge of a chunk of lead. With babbitt, its not so
easy. I'm sure there is some type of density test that could be done to
determine the make up of your material. Melting point is possibly
another way to tell as pure lead would be considerably lower than
babbitt (I would think).
