The first method is to mount the valve in a drill and press emery paper onto
the carbon deposits while the valve is spinning be careful on tapered edge
of valve most of the carbon is underneath the valve or on top the carbon on
top can be scraped off carefully with a blunt screwdriver i use the emery on
the carbon underneath as you can damage if you try to scrape the carbon off
add some kerosine as a lubricant as can get quite hot it also helps soften
the carbon..

These are ideas written in a 1917 car repair book.

Carbon can be manually removed by blunt scrapers screwdrivers with the shape
edges removed need to gain access to do this by removing head etc.

Carbon can be removed with an oxygen flame by burning it off.

Carbon can be softened ie soaking valves in a solution prior to cleaning can
be softened by kerosine, wood alcohol acetone or other carbon solvents

In the book it read: a simple preventative of carbon deposits is to put a
tablespoon full of kerosine in each cylinder through the compression relief
cocks at the end of a days run while the engine is still hot. This softens up
the carbon over night and when the moter is started the next day a large
proportion of the carbon deposited the previous day will be blown out with
the exhaust gases.

Hope that helps brent nz
