[SEL] Totally Off Topic

Hi Guys,
I apologise for this totally off topic letter but it does have
bearing on a letter I wrote to the list about a month ago - the discussion
was "gun control" and crime after that school shooting in the USA.

I mentioned the crime in South Africa and how we have all been
affected and how the rest of the world never gets to hear about it.

Well my mother was attacked, beaten up and robbed in her house 2
nights ago. The steel security gate on one of the doors was broken out with
a crowbar and then the glass door simply smashed with a rock. This was
after midnight and she was asleep. The first she knew was when she was
roughly pulled from her bed and beaten with a heavy stick and money
demanded from her. She gave them what she had and between her and her
little dog managed to fight them off and they fled. Thank goodness she was
not raped as this is what these people usually do to humiliate the old
people. She has a few bruises, a stab wound in the leg and a broken finger.
She got off lightly. She's a tough "Old Cookie".

My mother lives alone in her own house near the coast (about 350
miles from here). She is 86 years old. This is the second time that this
has happened to her in the last 10 years and the third time in her life.

She refused to allow my brother (who lives near me) or I to go
down and visit her saying that she is fine and it would just be a waste of
time and money. Fortunately we have friends living near her and they have
confirmed that she is O.K.

Our laws prohibit the mention of race in the reporting of crime
but I feel I can safely say "The perpetrators were not White skinned".

Once more, I apologise for the "Off Topic" post and do not wish to
start a new thread with this one - just thought you should know -
especially all those of you who responded "off list" last time. I
appreciate it.

Keep the revs up (or down)
