Hello Curt,
I am surprised that you had not encountered steam cylinder oil in worm
gear boxes. A good treatise on the subject can be found here:
http://www.southernsteamtrains.com/misc/steam-oil-hwade.htm

Many of the steam cylinder oils now offered are blended with a "synthetic
tallow" instead of animal fat. For the stationary engines, I actually
prefer 460w since it feeds easier through a hydrostatic lubricator at the
lower pressures we run. Most girder frame and bayonet frame corliss
engines were made to run at 80 to 100 psi, it was not until the late
1890's that pressures crept past 100 psi. We like to run about 50 psi
since they don't release quite as early and are a little less violent in
their motion. Conoco Inca-Oil 460 is the brand I prefer.

Mobil 600w steam cylinder oil can be purchased in quarts and gallons from
Motion Industries, a chain of industrial supply stores located throughout
the country and formerly known as Wisconsin Bearing. I get all my
bearings, belting, oils and greases through them. I also buy babbit bars
and bronze bushings from them. Ask for the "Boston Bronze" catalog which
features finished and semi-finished bronze bushings from the Boston Gear
Co., usually I can buy a finished bushing for less than it would cost me
for a cored chunk of bearing bronze from which to turn one.

Next, have you heard of DTE? Dynamo, Engine and Turbine oil? Something
else pretty common in industry that is a bit of a throwback to the
Edwardian era.

Joe
