Hi Jim,
I will speculate that when metal is broken down to the molecular level and is
in the oil, it absorbs rather than reflects light. Consider how when you are
polishing brass or aluminum that the polishing rag turns black no matter the
color of the metal you are polishing. Polishing removes minute amounts of
metal smoothing the surface and improving the reflective quality.
