Peter,
Grab a copy of Audacity. It is free and works really good.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Also download the LADSPA Plug-Ins. They include a VERY useful tool to
eliminate the pops, hiss and other noise.
If you want to convert to MP3 format you will also need the Lame MP3
encoder. http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=290
The catch with vinyl is that you cannot just connect up the turntable
output to the computer input as you can with just about all other signal
sources. The signal is too low and not equalized properly. So you need a
small amplifier with phono input to go between.
If you have the phono connected to a stereo your all set. Just connect
an audio out on the stereo to the audio input (NOT the MIC input)on your
computer.
For the pops and clicks you need to record the music. Then you use the
Click Eliminator tool and the Noise Elimination plug in to select the
noise and clicks. The program will then clean the file.
Oh and if you wanted to make it even simpler you could just buy a
Gemini iKey Plus Portable USB Recorder. Or maybe the Numark DM 950 USB
Mixer.
