Curt , my Tos swings 18 inches and runs up to 1000 rpm. It uses a 5 hp
motor. Its got plenty of power for heavy work

Subject: [SEL] OT? Lathe HP question

Guys,
The Carroll Jamison lathe I am reburbishing was originally a line shaft
driven machine. At the moment my plan is to direct belt drive it with a
3 phase motor using no gearbox. I am thinking of using an inverter to
control motor speed.
But I don't know what HP to put on it. 2,3 or 5HP? Inverters are pretty
good at giving full torque even at slow speeds so oversizing the motor
to accomodate low speeds shouldn't be necessary.
The chucks are marked 10" and it look like the lathe will swing about 14
max. (but not over the carriage)
Curious what HP motors you guys have on your lathes. This will give me
an idea how to size the motor for this one.
Thanks,
Curt Holland
