Peter,
There sure are a lot of us picking up old lathes these days. One
followed me home a couple of weekends ago and it is set up in the garage
right in front of Missy's gardening shelf. Oh.....she _really_
appreciated THAT! The brand name is a Carroll Jamieson. Here are a few
pictures:

Like you, I too would like some information on age, type, etc. Anyone
heard of a Carroll Jamieson machine tools? As I recall it will swing
roughly 14" and is 36" between centers. Not real big, but decent for
around the house stuff.
This one has been sitting in a barn for 15 years and there is a pretty
good film of light rust on everything. So I'm currently taking it all
apart and wire brushing the rust away, reoiling, and getting everything
sliding smoothly again.
Being that it is an old line shaft driven lathe, who knows what kind of
tolerance it will hold??? At the very least I am hopeful it will be able
to turn wooden parts for the pattern making. I'm sure this will make my
machineshop buddy very pleased, as he has been _very_ tolerant in
letting me use his production metal lathe for the pattern parts.
Thru the years we have debated the pros and cons of painting barn fresh
engines. But what about barn or shop fresh antique machine tools? While
I have this lathe all apart, should I be cleaning the parts and
eventually put a fresh coat of battleship grey on it? Or leave it as is,
but cleaned up....whatdaya ya'll think?
