Mornin' Elden -
For the time being, I'm hoping I don't have to resort to the "full on
treatment" since the owner only wants to know the condition of what he's
got and to see if it'll run. Plus, too, I got a bang out of the "Cow's
Adopted Child" decal and who hate to destroy it completely without
having a replacement available. Right now, as Tim mentioned earlier, the
tough spot to deal with may be the head bolts down in the hopper.
Electrolysis would be a good candidate there. Being fully enclosed, it
appears there's no water in the bottom end, but looking at the dip
stick, it's thick and black, typical of decades of dormancy. I kind of
get the impression that the owner is looking for the "sale-ability" of
the engine. Who knows, I might even get a change to put a bid in on it
(like I need another lump of iron!), but first I have to play mechanic
and spread it all over the shop. I've used electrolysis in limited cases
and it does work well.

Make the block the negative terminal and suspend a hunk of scrap in the hopper, insulated from it. Now, fill the hopper with warm water and, while stirring, add the electrolyte )one of several) until the current stops rising.
