[SEL] Curved spokes ...engine rotation

I am restoring a engine of unknown make . It has two fly wheels with curved 
spokes . The fly wheels can be fitted from either side ,i.e. curved spokes 
leading or trailing . It would seem logical that the spokes should be 
trailing but is this always the case?
