Gerald, That engine is one of the Fairbanks Morse cheapline hit and miss
engine. Yes, the bell shaped thing at the bottom of the head is the carb.
That is the dead give away that it was the H-M version of the Z The
throttle governed engines had a carb with a bowl for starting on gas and
then switching to kerosene. it had 2 needle valves and a throttle. You can
take the screw out of the hold down for the gas line that goes into the
tank and the whole assy will pull out of the carb and the tank. There will
be a check ball at the bottom that will have to work in order to suck up
the gas right. What you are referring to as the decompression valve is
actually the intake valve. It has a weak spring and works from the vacuum
of the engine. That engine also originally used a Model T Ford coil. Where
the pushrod goes into the cam bracket is the original timer. The cam should
have a cutout and when the ignition occurs the pushrod will go backward to
work the timer. If you check, all that add on stuff might not be necessary.
The speed lever changes the distance of the governor for the hit and miss
governor. These engines were made cheaper to compete with the cheap battery
ignition engines on the market. They also used wood skids instead of the
steel one like is on it now. That skid was for the more expensive throttle
governed Z.. The brass and glass oiler on the top was also all steel on
this engine originally and they were painted red istead of the standard
green. The serial number should be on the top of the hopper on a cast boss.
That will let us find the year. I think this engine started in 23 if I'm
remembering right. CRS!! Hope some of tis makes sense.
