Tom is talking about spray welding, a method where powdered metal is sprayed on in a flame. It's commonly used to build up shafts in worn areas for seal or bearing fit. Flux welding wouldn't work on a piston. I've known aircraft engines to use chrome plated cylinders, but this wasn't to correct wear, it was for durability. Chrome plating is very thin, it wouldn't help much for worn parts.
