[SEL] Samson Engine???

Hi Orrin,
I think the engine still has the original cylinder. Regan engines are
quite rare. I think there about 6 or 7 around that I know of. Anton's
is a later model (still circa 1895 I would guess) and has a piston
tripped ignitor. It is in nice original condition and runs well.
Anton has a nice collection of about 50 California built engines.
Next May there will be an engine show at his place that will feature
only California built engines. I will be bringing my 8 HP Daniel Best
engine.
Greg

Greg, thank you for the information. I've filed it with my notes.

As I recall, when the engine was sold the cylinder appeared to have been
repaired. While visiting with the buyer, he mentioned he already had a
good
replacement cylinder.

The Engine in question is a Regan. It is owned by Anton Affentranger of
Bakersfield, Ca and is currently on loan the Coolspring Power Museum in
Coolspring, PA. Anton bought the engine at the auction in Sturgis.

Charlie, good to hear from you.

I remember the engine and you remembered the high bid, correctly. It
seems
to me it was a Regan. I have pictures of it and I think I might still
have
some notes I took that day. Let me dig around and see if I can come up
with
some more information. Another fellow from our club attended. I'll
pick
his memory, too.

I'll get back to you on this after I've had a chance to do some
checking.

I had the distinction of paying the most money for a magneto, that day.
With the way prices have been going up since then, it almost seems like
a
bargain, now.

Best regards,

Orrin

Question for Orrin Iseminger. Orrin: Remember the Nixon Auction at
Sturgis,
SD about 10 years ago where I first met you? There
was an engine there with one flywheel which was on the right side and
only a
pulley on the left side. It was a horizontal engine with no hopper. They
said this was an engine built in CA. Two guys who
they said was from Stockton,CA . bought the engine. I know it was the
highest price engine that was sold there and I think it went for about
$15,000. I sent a couple of photos to Rob the Skinner and he said
he had not seen the engine (or ever one like it). The cylinder
and flywheel look similar to a Sampson engine. He knew of a fellow
from Stockton who collects CA built engines and would inquire if he is
the
one that bought that engine and if it is a Samson.

This is the first time we had met. I told you I would be wearing
a yellow cap with our engine club logo. I had been there quite
awhile and couldn't figure out why you hadn't showed up.
(of course I didn't know what you looked like). Finally you came up and
asked me if I was Charlie Bryant. I said yes. He said there was
one or two other guys there with yellow caps and he didn't know which
one
was me. I didn't buy anything at the auction. My Cousin
and husband have a ranch on the outskirts of Custer and I was visiting
them.
