You can always heat the part to ~700F to dehydrate the carbunkles and 
allow easy removal. I have been doing this for years using an old kiln. 
Also removed the grime allowing one to see cracks real easy. I did this 
on a couple of oilfield engines with plugged ported cylinders (ARACOs) 
and it worked like a champ.  Slow heating is the operative phrase here.
