[SEL] Old style Alamo question (not Blue line)

During the summer I posted some pictures of a tray cooled early Alamo
that followed me home. I've been putting it together over the last few
months. There was one missing part and I made a pattern of the latch out
arm, had it cast, and machined it. The latch out works well now.

Now I am working on timing the engine, getting the exhaust valve opening
and closing at the right time, and the ignitor tripping at the right time.

This is a walking beam style engine. I have adjusted the button on the
bottom of the exhaust valve so that the exhaust valve closes right at
TDC or just the slightest bit past TDC. That's as it should be. But as I
continue to roll it thru the valve doesn't open until fully at BTC or
even slightly PAST BTC on the exhaust cycle.

So far all the old gas engines I've worked on open the exhaust valve
roughly 2/3's the way thru the power stroke. They all close the exhaust
valve at TDC or 5° past TDC.

Could some of you fellows with old style Alamo's have a look at your
engines and share what you see on your engines? Maybe this is the way
Alamo designed it???
