George,
Suspect after hearing about your HOWT tours and the EHOWT we all feel
like our little trips to see engine collection pale by comparison!
Personally only having been in the hobby 7 or 8 years we've simply not
had the time yet to see many of the collections. With work and limited
vacations only short trips are permitted. But a few trips/shows are
memorable. Early on when putting the 6HP Herc buzz saw together I could
not find a front axle for the cart. The cart itself had required a drive
to east Virginia and that was a good father son adventure. The front
axle required a trip to St. Louis to see Jim White. He had the front
half of a cart and a deal was struck. His engine collection of I'm
guessing 500 engines was sure worth the long drive. We made it a family
event and took in the arch in St. Louis and other sites.
A few years ago we decided to do the Mt. Pleasant show. We took the
round about way home thru Baraboo and the Dells and visited Nels
Johnsrud to see his collection of David Bradleys.
I have to count annual pilgrimages to Portland and Coolsprings as HOWT's
tours in themselves, when you consider the number of engines seen per
miles driven!
I image when we are enjoying the 7 day weekend, there will be more
opportunity for the HOWT trips you've tantalized us with! We really have
enjoyed your reports.

P.S. In a few weeks a OzHOWT report should be coming ;-)
