OK, it definitely seems to have a problem with the information stored
in cookies. Firefox keeps giving login errors, but Opera logs me in
correctly each time, and also brings up a new security number each
time as well, while Firefox retains the original number for subsequent
logon attempts.

Perhaps Spencer could have a look at that bit of software? also might
be worth ditching the security number for existing members who already
have a password?
