It is National Pipe Thread and it can be formed in parallel or taper.
The same applies to British Standard Pipe (BSP) thread.

I showed a fellow a site by Kohler, the plumbing fixture folks, that
states
national pipe thread, he came backwith an engineers toolbox site that
says
national pipe taper.

If I'm wrong, I want to know so I can go back and tell him he's
right.........
