We have had success with Zinc barrel plating, where the items are
tumbled with other bits in a barrel. Comes out quite close to
Galvanised, but if you want the proper 'wood grain' sort of surface
finish again then hot dip galvanising is the way to go.

On all counts, it has to be very clean before you start.
