As for flat belts being black - 

If it's leather and you want it black - Just dye it with leather dye.

However - I find most all my belts are of a dark finish because of the
handling using gloves or hands that are covered with oil & grease.

I had one long belt that Lee shortened and made into two belts for a
minimal charge at coolsprings.
