Hi Joe,
         Once the iron bar is removed it allows the smoke to escape. Since 
a coil needs smoke in order to operate properly you now need to find a new 
coil. Hope that this helps and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

PS, Once the smoke escapes from a coil it can not be reinstalled properly.
